ABOUT

The City of Newton is undertaking a redevelopment study for Newton South High School to address the school’s educational, building, infrastructure, and accessibility needs. Originally constructed in 1960, the approximately 379,000-square-foot school has undergone several additions and renovations over time, but portions of the facility and its building systems now require significant modernization.

The project will begin with a comprehensive feasibility study that will evaluate potential approaches ranging from renovation and expansion of the existing school to more substantial redevelopment alternatives. Key priorities include improving and expanding science laboratories, enhancing Career and Technical Education spaces, replacing aging mechanical and building systems, addressing roofing and site conditions, and improving accessibility throughout the facility. The study will also consider sustainability, energy efficiency, long-term operating costs, educational programming, and the needs of students, staff, families, and the broader community.

The goal of the project is to develop a high-quality, efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective solution that supports Newton South High School’s educational program for years to come. Through collaboration among Newton Public Schools, City departments, project consultants, local boards and committees, and community stakeholders, the project will help ensure that Newton South continues to serve as an important educational and community resource for the City of Newton.
